Christchurch snow Thu 6 Feb 86
The early snow of January 1986 disappeared to be replaced by wind and sleet but by Thursday 6th February the snow had returned and on that day 47056 is seen on 6W62 11.55 Furzebrook OS to Fawley ESSO, riding the yellows as it heads East around an hour early with loaded TEA's. Within a few weeks this locomotive was taken into works for ETH fitment and emerged as 47654 in May. At this time the former Pickfords warehouse was in use by 'Peeks', a local company specialising in party and giftware but business expansion and Council persuasion saw them move out in 1998 to a nearby industrial estate built on the former railway goods yard (Cl.1973). Uninspiring residential housing has replaced the structure. Next to pass was an unidentified 47 which hustles a late running Up interregional, 1M14 11.40 Poole to Manchester Picadilly, before we move to the former loading dock at the London end. Here an 12-Vep arrives over the River Avon bridge past the former junction for the line to Ringwood (Cl.1935). Only the first 9 coaches actually fit in the platform so anyone in the rear Vep will either be jumping down onto the cess or be running through the train to get out before it pulls away. The down fast formed of a Rep/TC follows but is checked by signals as it approaches the station. A down interregional, 1O03 06.50 Liverpool Lime St to Poole follows with 47603 'County of Somerset' in charge. Finally a 4-Vep departs with an up Slow. It was then home to thaw out and recharge the battery which frankly did well to last so long in the cold.

Christchurch snow Wed 29 Jan 86

Snow started to fall in Dorset in the evening of Monday 21st January 1986 and the following day we find trains running well at Christchurch station. A Rep/TC combination makes a sure footed get away towards Bournemouth with the Down Semi, followed by 47468 on an Up interregional, 1M23 14.40 Poole to Liverpool Lime St, which it worked as far as Reading. 47468 is noteworthy for later having ETH r...
3) EMU's in the Snow in Kent Sun 18 Jan 87

Conditions had not improved much as daylight broke on Sunday 18th January 1987 but BR had got the measure of the poor weather and just about everything was running as booked with no diesel assistance. Local news reports indicated snow was particularly bad on the Isle of Grain so we headed in that direction and found a location adjacent to the Ridham Dock branch. A 4-Vep calls briefly at Swale H...
2) Snowdrift at Lenham Heath Sat 17 Jan 87
Переглядів 283 тис.10 років тому
My rather pale paean to the BTF classic 'Snow Drift at Bleath Gill'. On Saturday 17th January 1987, Snowblower ADB968500, on loan from the Scottish region arrives at Maidstone East having just cleared the snow covering the Up line from Ashford. The unit then returned to Lenham Loops, where it turned on an in-built self contained mechanism before clearing the Down line back towards Ashford, wher...
1) Maidstone East snow Sat 17 Jan 87
Переглядів 11 тис.10 років тому
Heavy snow arrived in Britain overnight on Thursday 15th January 1987 and continued to fall for the next 24 hours fanned by high winds. By Saturday several lines were blocked in the South East and many others were only operating because British Rail was able to draft diesels in to haul the struggling EMU fleet. The previous day a class 56 had been used to work EPB stock on the North Kent line a...

Shot on a 1st generation Betamax tube camera, it struggled with the muggy light of a late Summer evening at Rotherham Masborough. The station was under threat of closure at the time but a handful of services were still calling after most local traffic had been diverted to a re-opened Rotherham Central from 11th May 1987. I can't find my notes but from the public timetable it would appear captur...
Bramley Bunker railtour 1st March 1987

Short film of DEMU units 205033/026 on perhaps one of the most remarkable tours of (relatively) recent years. Three trips were run from Basingstoke around the former MOD Bramley Ammunition depot on Sunday 1st March 1987. This extensive facility with over 30 miles of track had opened in 1917 but these were to be both the first and last public trains before closure. The first seen leaving Basings...

Trip to South Wales on 3rd February 1987 in search of what were at the time a new sub class 37 - the 37/9's. The Aberbeeg signalman obligingly provided a cup of tea and told us what was about - the days when you could just knock on a signalbox door on spec ! Did not note the loco on the down loaded coal from Marine Colliery, but the empties were powered by 37293. We were eventually rewarded wit...

F & W railtours Peak tour from Plymouth to Uckfield on Saturday 27th December 1986. 45104 came on at Bristol Temple Meads and it seen at Hever heading down to Uckfield, where run round facilities were still available. Return is seen in fading light at Eridge. The class was rapidly being withdrawn at the time but a few examples lingered on into 1988, and one into 1989. F&W railtours were re-name...

Weymouth Quay Tramway in 1987, the last Summer of service trains. 33118 shunts out of Weymouth station, then runs down the street tramway on day that saw 3/4" of rainfall. Shot on an ITT VHS tube camcorder, a numpty for a cameraman, technology and a suspect tape format (VHS), that wasn't really up to much even then count against it, but uploaded to see if at least watchable. If not too grim mig...

ScotRail’s Bielhak Snowblower (see the Inverness MPD Stag’s Head 🦌 on its Cabside) was “Borrowed” by Network SouthEast in 1997 and never returned. Believe still shedded at Ashford. The CEO of NSE at the time was Chris Green. He previously was the CEO of ScotRail, and had purchased the Bielhak Snowblower for the ‘Far North Lines’ during his tenure. NSE could have easily afforded their own dedicated Snowblower but chose to steal the bought & paid for Scottish one. ScotRail were never recompensed by NSE, and now when it snows in Northern Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, they have to close the Far North Lines cutting off the only lifeline to those northern communities.

Great short film thanks!! I was 15 at the time. Apart from a lot of extra third rail arcing (and who doesn't like that?!) I always thought these EMU's were pretty unbothered by bad weather! Love all that track noise - so familiar. Doubtless BR had stuff running through the night to keep the track clear(ish)?

'87 was a bit brisk most of the time. I had been a professional DJ for 13 years at this time, and never missed a gig, not even once. My van. loaded with all the mobile disco gear, was well able to gain a grip most of the time. Gigs in High Wycombe were dodgy, the side roads were so hilly that the ice and snow was impossible to drive up. What I did then was to reverse up the hills. I had one wedding where only about half of the guests turned up, but I did, although it took me three hours to cover what was normally a 3/4 hour journey. And I gained many more gigs at night clubs because the DJ's could not make it. I must admit to wishing the rubbernecks on the bridge could have been showered with the snow from the Scottish Snow Blow. '87 lives in my mind as much as '63 did.

That station had a handful of name changes over the years. It was renamed just Rotherham around 1969 loosing the Masborough.. Used to love that big black heater with the guard around it in the little waiting room across platform. To confuse things Rotherham Central station was once called Rotherham & Masborough in yje 1880's

I was the driver in the locomotive under the bridge. I had just brought the snowblower onto the site and was waiting to take it back when the work was done.I took a photo from about 50 yards away alongside the blower and received a chunk of ice from the blower on my napper for being so careless.

I was on this tour ! I joined at London Paddington. The tour was not advertised on the main departure board, which was not unusual for a tour. The use of the Royal Mail bay platform 0 at Paddington was unusual. The tour was supposed to also have a Class 33 to East Grinstead, but we never made it due to sheep on the line. 45 104 took us into the run round at Uckfield, which was south of (beyond) the level crossing (now long gone). This was the truncated remains of the former LBSCR line from Uckfield to Lewes. I never missed a Class 45 tour if I could help it !
